From Sparks to Prairie Fires: Spatial Mechanisms of Group Mobilization∗

چکیده
Scholars have frequently mentioned the link between a group’s settlement pattern and its involvement in violent conflict. In this paper, I develop a computational model to examine this relationship in detail. I argue that the settlement pattern of a group has an impact on group mobilization, because it determines how quickly mobilization can spread from a few extremists to the entire group population. All else being equal, groups with a settlement pattern which is favorable to the spread of mobilization should show a higher probability of conflict. I propose a simple geographical mobilization mechanism. Starting with a few mobilized individuals located in the major cities of a group, mobilization spreads by means of individuals traveling between cities. The model uses real-world geographic data of group territories and cities. This way, it is possible to artificially mobilize an ethnic group according to the proposed mechanism, and to measure the ”difficulty” of mobilization of that group. This measure is then used as a predictor of conflict in a statistical analysis. ∗Paper prepared for presentation at the Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association in Chicago, August 30–September 2, 2007 and for the Sixth PanEuropean Conference on International Relations in Torino, September 12-15, 2007. Quantification of Climate Conditions Important to the Tall Grass Prairie
The geologic history of the tall grass prairie in central North America reveals the prairie began developing 10,000 years ago after the Pleistocene ice sheets had retreated into Canada. The long-lived triangular shaped prairie survived several climatic shifts during the Holocene. Scientists have studied the anomaly—grasses where many climate conditions indicate forests should have been growing—...
متن کاملEffects of Summer Fires on Woody, Succulent, and Graminoid Vegetation in Southern Mixed-prairie Ecosystems: a Review
Interest in the use of summer fires to restore southern Great Plains prairie ecosystems infested with woody plants and cactus is increasing, but information regarding effects on target and nontarget plant species is needed before this practice can be recommended. We review effects of summer and winter fires on mortality and growth of honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa), prickly pear (Opuntia p...

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which have the ability to differentiate into various types of blood cell lines, are usually separate from the bone marrow. But these cells are also present in a small amount in the peripheral blood, and their amounts increase in blood following injection of G-CSF. However, the mechanism involved in moving HSCs under the influence of G-CSF is unknown. The aim of ...
متن کاملSeasonal Fires, Bison Grazing, and the Tallgrass Prairie Forb Arnoglossum plantagineum Raf
Fire and grazing can interact to affect the structure and composition of vegetation communities in a manner that may differ from the effects of fire or grazing that occurs in isolation of the other. In order to better understand the effects of a fire-grazing interaction at the level of an individual plant species, we studied the response of a perennial tallgrass prairie forb, Arnoglossum planta...
